A Complete Guide to Scrapping Your Car

Posted By Birmingham Auto Break on 02/07/2018

Recycling or scrapping your car is easier than it ever has been. The process is straightforward and can be completed in as little as a day. To help you on your way, the team here at Birmingham Auto Break have put together this handy guide which will provide an overview of the process as well as a list of “do’s” and “don’ts” to help you make sure you don’t fall foul of any regulations.

Car scrapping in Birmingham and the wider West Midlands area couldn’t be simpler!

Our Environmental Obligations

In case you weren’t aware, only an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) can legally oversee the process of vehicle recycling. In other words, we have obtained the relevant licenses required of us by law to legally dispose of motor vehicles.

The driving force behind this legislation is in making sure that the vehicle recycling process is as environmentally friendly as possible as there are several components found within your average vehicle which could cause damage to the environment if not disposed of correctly.

The Certificate of Destruction when scrapping your car

When making use of a scrap yard in Birmingham, and indeed anywhere else in the country, you will be supplied with what is known as a Certificate of Destruction (COD) within seven days of having handed over your vehicle to us.

This is another legal requirement and essentially confirms that you are no longer responsible for your vehicle and have fulfilled all of your legal obligations. The final step will be for you to notify the DVLA that your vehicle has now been scrapped.

Please note that only cars, small vans and 3 wheeled motorcycles will receive a COD. We will personally notify the DVLA ourselves in the case of all other types of vehicle.

Finally, regardless of the type of vehicle you recycle, you will need to complete section 9 of your V5C document (logbook) which should be returned to the DVLA.

The Scrapping Process

With all of the important paperwork covered, we can now move on to the recycling process. You can start by:

  • Filling out the contact form on our website or giving us a call. From here, we will arrange to collect your vehicle from your location of choice if it is not fit to be driven or if it isn’t currently road legal.
  • You are also welcome to drop the vehicle off yourself, simply let us know you’re on your way.
  • Once the paperwork has been completed, you have the option to receive payment by bank transfer, PayPal transfer or in the form of a cheque.
  • You can then leave the rest to us as we strip your car for parts and recycle the body.

Points to Be Aware Of

It is now illegal to accept a cash payment for the recycling or scrapping of any vehicle. Only a bank transfer or a cheque should be offered.
